Arboricultural manager with Taunton Deane Borough Council Mark Holloway said the tree, which was at least 100 years old, had been used as a climbing tree by generations of children.
“I think it was the recent storms that damaged it. It’s a shame, but it’ll live on.”
Lateral pruning will be carried out at a later date to conserve the remaining stems.
