The president of the Wellington branch of the Royal British Legion, Michael Rose, laid a wreath at the war memorial in Wellington Park to mark the centenary of the foundation of the legion at 9am on Saturday (May 15).

Present were the chairman, Bob Trickey and secretary Scott Godwin, as well as other members of the legion and town clerk David Farrow.

Before laying the wreath, the president said: “We have come to mark the foundation of the Royal British Legion 100 years ago today. Their primary aim was to look after the needs of all ex-service personal and the families of those who had fallen, and lastly to foster friendships among them.

“We also commemorate all those men and women from this town and surrounding area, as well as from the whole of the United Kingdom and Empire, who made the ultimate sacrifice in two world wars and other conflicts. As we look to the future we should take pride in our history and all that has been achieved by the legion.”

After the wreath was laid the standard bearer lowered the legion’s standard as all present stood in silence to remember the dead.
