Wellington Monument was privileged to host Jonny and Kylie after Jonny had arranged with National Trust volunteers to propose to Kylie at the top of the Monument and she said ‘yes’.

Jonny and Kylie work for the NHS in Taunton and Kylie had no idea Jonny was going to propose – and the Monument lights were put on that night in recognition of their happy event.

The National Trust would like to thank them for their generous donation and, of course, all NHS staff for their tireless dedication through these difficult times.

The Monument and its lights can be used for anyone’s special occasion, like birthdays and anniversaries, in exchange for a donation.

On an equally happy note, visitors will be able to pick up free trees this month on certain dates from the Wellington Monument car park through the Saving our Devon Treescapes project – help and advice and free posts and guards will be on offer. Keep an eye on this column or use the contact details below.

In more good news, the footpath steps to the east of the Monument have now been reinstated thanks to Somerset County Council.

We are very sorry we had to cancel Carols at the Monument but the weather was truly against us – we hope it did not inconvenience anyone. We hope to be back next year bigger and better.
