WELLINGTON police appear to be winning their fight against anti-social behaviour by youths in the town.

Members of Wellington Town Council were told at their monthly meeting on Monday that 18 calls were made to the police regarding anti-social behaviour by youths last month, compared to 33 in October.

A report to the council stated: “One youth has been given a youth conditional caution. A number of youths have been charged to court.

“Wellington police officers, both PCs and PCSOs, follow social media and keep track of reports of crime and ASB on some of the local groups. Although officers do not comment on the groups we are aware of incidents and contents mentioned.

“We find it frustrating that a victim will take the time to report ASB on this medium but will not contact the police. Unless a crime is reported to the police there is nothing we can do.”

Councillors were told there were 271 calls for Wellington Town beat in November, compared to 236 in October and 209 in September.

The calls included: abandoned and hoax calls 12, burglaries – all types – four, anti-social behaviour 18, criminal damage 11, domestics 21, harassment/threats 17, public order 11, theft 12, assault 11, assist other emergency services seven, concern for welfare 29, missing persons nine, calls reporting suspicious activity 29, road-related incidents/RTC 32, deceased person six, alarm activations six, suicidal six, sexual offences one, animal-related two.

Councillors were also informed of the aggravated burglary at Joseph Welch Jewellers in South Street in the early hours of Saturday.

The police report stated: “Male has been arrested and charged for the burglary. Remanded over the weekend and is in court this morning (Monday). Male was arrested Saturday afternoon after being identified by town centre PCSO following CCTV viewing.”
