A CONTEMPORARY take on Shakespeare’s famous tragedy ‘Hamlet’ will be screened at Wellesley Cinema, Wellington in January 2026.

The National Theatre’s live production will feature Olivier Award-winner Hiran Abeysekera as Hamlet in a fearless, contemporary take on Shakespeare’s famous tragedy.

Trapped between duty and doubt, surrounded by power and privilege, young Prince Hamlet dares to ask the ultimate question, to be or not to be?

National Theatre deputy artistic director, Robert Hastie directs this sharp, stylish and darkly funny reimagining that will be shown at 7 pm on Thursday January 22.

This production will contain themes of grief and death, including suicide and the loss of a parent, depictions of mental illness, violence, and coercive behaviour.
