Health and Fitness
No-one wants to fail at anything. However, failure should not be seen as a stoppage towards our goals but merely a necessary stepping stone.
Anyone in the history of succeeding in anything has also failed many times along the way. The main difference between those who go on to succeed and those who don’t are whether they learn from their failures/errors and correct them to produce a different outcome next time.
Achieving a health and fitness goal is no different. We either win or we learn. If we do something that moves us closer to our goal, fantastic. We should pat ourselves on the back and remember what we did that worked well. We can simply replicate this as we received a positive result.
However, if we do something that didn’t work quite as well or didn’t go exactly to plan, then we have two options. We can either say ‘oh well, it happens’ or we can look again at the situation and say ‘what could I do differently next time which pushes me closer to my goal rather than further away’.
Of these two options, if we find ourselves constantly using the former phrase, ‘oh well, it happens’, we are not likely to move any closer to our goal because it’s too easy to push the responsibility away and blame something/someone else. All the while we are blaming other things, the less likely we are to take control of the situation and make the required changes.
If we choose to utilise the latter phrase, ‘what could I do differently next time’, we are taking responsibility for why it went wrong and making the necessary changes to produce a more positive outcome next time.
Those who learn from their ‘failures’ will inevitably be the ones who succeed eventually through consistently learning, adapting and getting better until the end goal is achieved.
