THE work of artist David Kodritsch, who died five years ago, is set to be exhibited at St Giles Church in Bradford-on-Tone.

The exhibition will include works in media including watercolours, acrylics, oil paintings, pen and ink drawings and other detailed sketches. One picture is unfinished and demonstrates David’s approach in constructing his work.

The exhibition will open with the installation of a three-dimensional piece he painstakingly completed in very fine detail. Muriel Bird, who was married to David, said: “This work mustn’t be missed. The Parochial Church Council were so impressed by this piece that they decided to apply for a faculty, giving permission to install it permanently in the church.

“It is a terrific accolade to David’s work and his memory, and I couldn’t have been more overjoyed when permission was granted.”

David, who lived near Wellington, loved the West Country which is depicted in many of the local scenes he created. His subjects include rural landscapes, animals in their natural habitat including badgers, foxes, hedgehogs and otters, alongside different species of birds.

Among his favourites were paintings and drawings of churches including West Buckland, Nynehead and St Giles. Seaside towns were also a subject with paintings of Lyme Regis, Minehead and Watchet before the new harbour.

Muriel added: “Other artists have commented on David’s amazing ability and skill in working in such fine detail, and that he had a unique style of painting and drawing. His work features a meticulous note of perspective and it reflects great use of colour and tone. His immense passion for his subject and his surroundings are truly evident in his work.”

Entry to the exhibition is free but donations will be gratefully accepted towards the church organ restoration fund.

The exhibition is open on Saturday, July 27, from 3-6pm and on Sunday, July 28, between 11am-5pm.
