FIREFIGHTERS from Wellington were among 16 crews who fought a field blaze at Thornfalcon near Taunton on Tuesday.

The field was near the main A358 and motorists were warned about drifting smoke and to drive slowly. Nearby residents were also told to keep windows of their homes closed.

Fifty per cent of the 30-acre field was destroyed. The fire was thought to be accidental. A crew from Wiveliscombe was also involved in putting out a car blaze at North Petherton the previous day.

Meanwhile, the Met Office has issued a warning that the risk of fire in the area tomorrow is ‘exceptional.”
