WASSAILERS made a racket with pots and pans, drums, whistles, bells and screams at The Dolphin in Waterloo Road, Wellington, on Saturday evening.

They re-enacted the ancient custom in the pub garden, which has two apple trees, to scare off the ‘Maulscrawl’ spirits and help ensure a good harvest.

The wassail, held on the old Twelfth Night, also included songs, poems and a display by the Mayhem Border Morris.

It was the eighth Wellington Wassail at the pub and was well attended.

Lee Edmead, of the Wellington Folk and Custom Society, which organised the event, said he would like to thank members of the public for supporting it.
