THE Wellington Folk & Custom Society will be celebrating the unique old custom of ‘Blaize ‘n’ Bridget Night’ at the Cottage Inn, Wellington, this coming Saturday.

There will be a ceremony to swear in the New Blaize and Bridget of Wellington Town by the only Freeman of Wellington Richard Fox. This will be followed by Morris dancing by the Bradninch Millers and the evening will continue with the celebrations, with a traditional folk session of tunes and songs into the night.

Meanwhile, the society have blessed the apple trees of the Quakers Peace Garden in Wellington. George Fenn was the Master of Ceremony, while Martina Piercy was the wise maiden. Those gathered scared away the Maulscrawls to protect the trees for a good healthy crop for the summer by banging kettles, drums, whistles and shouting and screaming.This was followed by blessing the trees with ribbons,.

Then the jolly crowd returned to the Cottage Inn, where Boot strap border performed music & dance in the Cottage Inn car park. The evening continued with a traditional music session.
