PEOPLE interested in helping with the management of a new community hall in Wellington have had their first initial meeting.

A virtual meeting was held on Monday by people who had expressed an interest in the building of a community hall on the Cades Farm development.

The meeting was initiated by Wellington Town Council, which has taken ownership of a piece of land at Cades Farm earmarked for a community facility.

“We have 12 people who want to be involved, including some with very relevant experience of delivering design and build projects,” said the council’s town clerk, Dave Farrow.

“Not everyone could attend but the initial meeting was just to give the overview of what the project is and also to hear from a group that has been there and done it before.

“So we had the chairman of the Bishop’s Hull Hub project attend to talk about his experiences, while we also had Jane Birch from the Community Council for Somerset at the meeting to talk about what support it could provide.

“The Community Council for Somerset has extensive experience of supporting community groups in running community halls all the way through from design and build to day-to-day management and development.”

Mr Farrow told the WWN that another meeting will be held in April at which the group will start to look in more detail at what needs to be done, including the group structuring itself to become self-managing.

People were invited to attend the meeting after the council posted an appeal on social media asking for anyone interested in the project to get in touch.

But not all the comments made in person or on social media about a new community centre on Cades Farm were positive or favourable.
