COUNCILLORS feel that a decision on the future of the much-maligned Longforth Road toilet block in Wellington has been made for them.
Back on December 23 a car crashed into the toilet block and caused significant damage and resulted in the loos being closed.
It came just as Wellington Town Council was looking to refurbish the toilets and make them more efficient and accessible for people.
But now it seems – considering the damage – that they really have one option.
Cllr Janet Lloyd, speaking at a council meeting on January 9 said: “They do say that God moves in mysterious ways. I think we now have to bite the bullet and demolish the toilets and rebuild them.”
Town clerk Dave Farrow, in a report, said: “We have liaised with the police and Somerset West and Taunton Council who attended on the day and secured the site and contacted our insurers who advised that they would send out a structural engineer in the new year to assess the damage.
“Once we have that report we will know what the position is with the block. If available this will be reported to the policy and resources committee in February along with recommendations about how to proceed.”
It was back in October when the council agreed to commission a specialist contractor to draw up detailed proposals and costings for a range of options.
Cllr Marcus Barr described them in October as “probably the worst toilets in Somerset.”
