THOUSANDS of pounds were handed out to good causes when Wellington Carnival held its cheque presentation at Wellington Bowling Club.
The two main beneficiaries, receiving £500 each, were Wellington-based dementia charity Reminiscence Learning and St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice.
About 50 people attended the presentation and chairman Dave Rylatt opened the event by thanking committee members, collectors, toy sellers, entertainment groups, the carnival princesses who attended, Terry Milton and Wellington Town Council for their continued support.
Other groups which attended also received cheques thanks to their efforts selling novelty toys, collecting or helping carnival with performances at the Carnival Street Fair in the summer.
Carnival secretary Louise Brierley said: “On the night we were able to donate £3,000 to local groups and charities.
“An abseil co-ordinated and insured by the carnival committee at Bradford-on-Tone church raised £13,000, so it should be really proud of its efforts.”
The next carnival event is the street fair on Sunday, June 3, with the carnival itself on Saturday, September 29.
