WELLINGTON Carnival Committee, supported by Wellington Majorettes, has raised an additional £1,000 for local charities, organisations and schools this month by taking the Carnival’s new Christmas float to Asda in Wellington, Monkton Elm Garden Centre in Taunton and Sampford Peverell, where villagers requested a visit.
The committee is now planning its next event, a sponsored abseil from the top of the tower at St John’s Church, just outside the town centre.
The event is on Saturday, February 27, and offers the chance of not only getting the best view of Wellington but the chance to abseil just over 100ft (under professional supervision).
Organisers are asking participants to raise money by obtaining at least £30 sponsorship. Half of any money raised will go to the charity/local group of the participant’s choice, the rest to other local groups and charities that have helped with Carnival this year.
Last time the event was organised by Wellington Experience and Xeiad Ltd in aid of FLAG (Flooded Levels Action Group), more than £4,000 was raised. It is hoped to beat that amount this time round.
The minimum age for entrants is 13 and a degree of fitness is required to climb the stairs leading to the top of the tower. Entry is restricted to the first 60 entries on a first come, first served basis.
Entry forms are available from the WWN office in the High Street or on the carnival website, www.wellingtoncarnival.org.uk, or phone Sam on 662186 and she will post a copy.
Wellington Carnival Committee would like to thank everyone at St John’s Church for their co-operation.
