The last couple of weeks in Westminster have been dominated by debates on the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill and I have been following the cut and thrust of the amendments in the Chamber.

Back in the constituency I have been gauging Brexit views from a wide circle of people – from members of Taunton Chamber of Commerce to Wellington residents, farmers and church leaders, among others. The consensus is that people want progress and want a smooth and orderly Brexit that does not disrupt their lives and businesses. A transition period is acceptable to most but with a firm leave date.

It is important to remember that people voted to leave the EU and we will leave on March 29 2019, – triggered by voting for Article 50 – and that is what we are committed to delivering.

Theresa May took a great step forward last week when President Tusk announced that we were to progress to phase two of the negotiations. Already we have committed to protecting EU citizens here and UK citizens in the EU will be protected similarly. I received personal assurances on the latter from the Prime Minister in the Chamber. Similarly Dexeu Minister Steve Baker assured me that invaluable EU citizens working in our care system and NHS would be looked after.

Our key aims remain gaining control of our borders, setting our own laws, and building a new European economic and security relationship. Maintaining high standards – especially on environment and animal welfare – and a practical approach to regulation is important as well as achieving the greatest possible access to European markets.

On the wider world market we are aiming to strike new trade deals across the world that will support new jobs and open new markets. Already, the International Trade Department has improved terms for 200 new markets and the Great British Food Unit has been working on deals to export beef to the Philippines and lamb to Kuwait, all potentially beneficial to our West Country livestock farmers.

I am confident we will be entering the new year in a positive position to deliver the best Brexit possible.
