WELLINGTON Choral Society presented Remembrance 100 Years, a concert of remembrance, including readings, choral singing and organ music at St John’s Church.

The large and appreciative audience, which included Wellington’s Mayor Gary James and Deputy Mayor Janet Lloyd, and their consorts, were moved by the readings from Wilfred Owen, reflecting the Great War, William Walker from the Second World War and Nicholas Lutwyche, who fought in the Falklands campaign, read by Michael Furness.

The choral society’s sophisticated programme, conducted by Laurence Blyth, ended with Durufle’s Requiem and brought to life moments of emotion and suffering through music.

The choral society includes one special member – Jim Booth, 97 year old D-Day veteran and survivor of an horrific attack at his home a year ago. Jim shows that music can span all ages.

The retiring collection benefited SSAFA – the Armed Forces charity – and a generous £417.25 was collected from an appreciative audience by cadets from 41F Air Cadets who added a smart, military element to the evening. All money collected remains in Somerset and is spent on welfare for serving and ex-service people and their families when in need.

WELLINGTON Choral Society’s Spring Concert is J S Bach’s St Matthew Passion. The choir would welcome new members – no audition is required. Rehearsals start at 7pm on Wednesday, January 9, at Wellington Methodist Church, Waterloo Road, Wellington TA21 8JQ.
