MOTORISTS are set to continue to be able to park free of charge in Somerset West and Taunton Council’s (SWT’s) car parks for a few more weeks.

Councillors decided to retain free parking until August 30 at a full council meeting last week as a way of supporting town centres.

The Government ordered councils across the country to cease car park charges at the start of the coronavirus lockdown in March, although some local authorities brought them back as early as May.

Free parking extends only to SWT-owned sites and not to on-street parking, run by Somerset County Council.
