THE damp weather failed to dent the Christmas spirit on Saturday afternoon as crowds gathered in Wellington town centre to enjoy a range of festivities in the build up to the Christmas lights switch-on.
Wellington Majorettes opened proceedings, escorting Santa into town accompanied by the Carnival Queen and Princess, before giving a display to music.
The fun continued with songs performed by Wellington Pantomime group, a display by Avtar’s Bollywood Dancing and Christmas carols from Beech Grove Primary School.
Archie the Scarecrow spoke about his role with Reminiscence Learning, the Churches Together annual sheep-spotting event was launched and the Rev Steve Jenkins provided the Christmas message.
Then Jonathan Devey and Lucie Tooze, head boy and girl at St John’s Primary School, joined Wellington Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Gary and Bee James, to turn on the lights.
The Christmas decorations and the tree, given by Langford Lakes, will light up the town centre over the next few weeks and into the New Year.
Roundabout rides for the children, mince pies and glow sticks were also on offer, sending the crowds home entertained and well-fed.
A spokesperson for the town council, which organised and paid for the event, said: “It was lovely to see so many people at this free event.
“Big thanks as ever go to the many supporters who helped make it happen, including Ken Coles for the loan of the stage.”
