MEMBERS of the Armed Forces who took part in the D-Day Landings 75 years ago in June 1944 were remembered and the event commemorated in a service at the war memorial at Wellington Park on Saturday morning.

Wellington among three fire crews working to free horse trapped in farm slurry pitMichael Rose, president of the Royal British Legion Wellington branch, who was ten at the time of the action, gave an account of events and the impact of the build up to the D-Day Landings on the West Country.
The Revd Julie Scott led the brief service of Remembrance which included the laying of wreaths led by Mayor of Wellington Cllr Jane Lloyd; Bill Maidment, on the behalf of the Royal British Legion (RBL) Wellington branch; Madge Covey, on the behalf of the RBL Wellington Women’s Section; and Mary Nickerson on behalf of the Normandy Veterans’ Association.
The service ended with an Act of Remembrance which began with the Exhortation and the playing of the Last Post when standard bearer Robert Trickey dipped the RBL Wellington branch standard. The silence ended with the playing of the Reveille and the giving of Kohima Epitaph.
The RBL Wellington branch would like to thank everyone who attended the event and the three members of the Parachute Regiment Association for providing the escort for the branch standard.
