He served in the branch for seven years before being offered the opportunity to take early retirement, which he gladly took in January, 1991, marking the end of a career with Lloyds Bank that spanned more than 34 years.
Not long after taking early retirement, David turned his hand to a new venture and established a residential letting business, based in the offices of Wilkie, May & Tuckwood on the High Street in Wellington. The nine years he spent running the business, building it up steadily, took him through to full retirement in 2000.
However, David will be long remembered for the many organisations that he was appointed to and was a proud member of in the Wellington community. He was the treasurer of multiple organisations, covering a range of interests including Wellington Youth Centre, West Buckland PCC and Wellington Chamber of Trade & Commerce. In addition, he was a governor of Wellington School for 14 years, a member of 41 Club and Probus and regularly played for Home Guard 4 in the Wellington Ex-Services Skittles League.
His most prominent work was with the Rotary Club of Wellington, which he served for 37 years, during which time he provided unwavering support to the range of causes they have supported and wise counsel to old and new members alike. Twice he served as the club president, in 1994/95 and 2011/12, and epitomised the club’s mission of “Service Above Self” right through until his passing last week.
David leaves a wife Sue, two children Kate and James, and five grandchildren.
