YOUNGSTERS – and some adults – continue to put their lives in danger by entering the old and derelict buildings at Tonedale Mill, Wellington.

The serious nature of the problem was highlighted by the WWN at the end of March.

But PCSO Simon Bramley, from Wellington Police Station, says the mill is still being used as a giant playground for children and an object of interest by adults.

He said yesterday: “We actually found adults in the mill from Yeovil with children. They had read about the mill and wanted to see it for themselves.

“We get a number of calls a year from people concerned about children at the derelict site.

“It is a huge attraction for youngsters but the buildings are a death trap. Someone could be killed. If anything the problem is getting worse not better.

“The dangers include glass, timbers, metal and masonry falling from height, hazardous materials – asbestos has been removed in the past – ground giving way, trip and water hazards.”

One letter writer to this newspaper said last month: “I live directly opposite the mill and can confirm that what the local police and PCSOs are saying that the site is a potential death trap, is not exaggerated in any way.

“Many times I have seen adults and children strolling around the site and entering the buildings with no problem gaining access.

“It will, as usual, take a tragedy before any action is taken with everyone denying it was down to them.”

The site is routinely patrolled by police and PCSOs and local residents are excellent at informing them if they see anyone entering the mill.
