WELLINGTON'S first deputy mayor, Cllr Janet Reed, has resigned from the post.

Cllr Reed, who was appointed at a historic ceremony in May 2008, has blamed restrictions of the position in speaking her mind.

She remains a town councillor for Wellington West ward.

Cllr Reed's resignation, handed to town clerk Greg Dyke this morning, has left the council looking for a replacement.

The issue will be on the agenda for the December meeting of the council, due to take place on December 7.
