To commemorate the 75th anniversary of VJ-Day about 60 people gathered at Hemyock War Memorial for a short service led by Rev Canon Becky Totterdell.
Lt Col Tim Courtenay OBE, DL, Royal Marines (Retired) spoke of the battle which took place at Kohima and gave the well known Kohima Epitaph. He laid a wreath on behalf of the community.
The Rector read out the names of local men who had lost their lives in the Second World War, and of one who died in the Malayan conflict, after which two minutes silence was observed.
Among those present were veterans, relatives of those who had served in Burma and representatives of Hemyock Parish Council.
