CHILDREN from Beech Grove Primary School in Wellington learnt about the story of King Alfred on a visit to Somerset Museum.

The Year 3 pupils acted out some of the key moments in the Saxon Day event – including some very fierce battle cries when the Vikings attacked the Saxons.

The children were also asked to make their own clay rune and write messages using the Saxon alphabet. They saw a replica of the Alfred Jewel and painted their own to take home.

A school spokesperson said: “Everyone had a really enjoyable day – they all had a great time looking around the museum and seeing the different artefacts.

“It was a fantastic day and a big thank you to everyone at the museum and all those adults who came along to support the trip.”
