TWO days of health and well-being workshops at Rockwell Green Primary School could help prevent a child from making bad lifestyle choices in later years.

Members of Wellington Town Council’s policy and finance committee agreed on July 13 to award Life Education Wessex and Thames Valley a £290 grant to help fund the workshops.

Councillors heard that the workshops would involve around 200 children at Rockwell Green and the grant would equate to just £1.45 per pupil.

Cllr Mark Lithgow said: “I was a sceptical about this at first, but having read the report it is obvious that education changes the world. I’m now in support of this application.”

Cllr Andy Govier said that he did not want to sound like a “stuck record” and say the “same old cliché” which he had done on numerous occasions in the past, but he did so regardless.

“When you look at the amount of money involved and it’s going to help 200 children – if one of those young people make better lifestyle changes in the future then it is money well spent,” he said.

Life Education Wessex – which has been running since 1993 - provides health education programmes at local schools.

The charity works across Dorset, Somerset, Devon and Hampshire providing programmes in schools giving children the skills and knowledge to make healthy choices in life including the adverse effects of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and psychoactive substances.

A Life Education Wessex spokesman said: “We help to effectively communicate healthy lifestyle messages and empower children aged from three to 13 with the knowledge, skills and self-confidence to make positive healthy decisions and stay safe in school.”

The spokesman said that children found the sessions “fun, engaging and memorable.”

The programmes are delivered under the strapline entitled Helping Children Make Healthy Choices.
