THE first Wellington Jumble Trail later this month has seen more than 30 households across the town sign up to take part.

The event on Sunday, May 24, which is the spring bank holiday weekend, is being promoted by the town council, which wants to encourage residents to recycle or reuse items rather than throw them away.

The council ‘borrowed’ the idea from a community event held in Watchet last year.

It allows people to set up stalls in their front gardens or outside their front doors to sell items as they would in a regular jumble sale, except they are scattered across the town.

The council has produced a trail leaflet which maps the 33 households taking part, stretching from Tonedale to the Cades estate to Rope Walk in the south, and out to Dobree Park, in Rockwell Green.

The leaflet also explains what is available at each of the locations.

A town council spokesperson said: “We are very excited for this event and hope that people enjoy the day.

“Physical copies of the leaflet are available at our reception at 30 Fore Street.

“Check out our event page ‘Wellington Jumble Trail’ to see updates from sellers as they get their items ready for posting.”

The trail offers residents and visitors to the town an opportunity to stroll around the different neighbourhoods, meet local people, grab a bargain, and sell some of their own unwanted items.

The popularity of town jumble trails has been on the increase across the country as they are also seen as a way to help promote a sense of community cohesion.

The £4 entry fee paid by stallholders is being used by the council to meet the cost of putting on the event, including producing the jumble trail map.
