NATURE lovers across Somerset are being encouraged to share photographs of the wildlife and wild spaces found close to home.

This year’s Somerset Wildlife Trust’s annual photography competition, with the theme “nature on your doorstep”, celebrates wildlife encounters in towns, villages, parks, gardens and green spaces across Somerset.

Whether exploring the streets of Wellington, the riverside paths of Bridgwater, or the parks and gardens of Yeovil, photographers are encouraged to look a little closer and discover the wildlife on their doorstep.

From foxes exploring urban streets and birds nesting in built-up areas, to insects thriving in gardens, the competition aims to showcase the incredible variety of species living alongside us.

The competition will crown an overall winner and youth winner (under 18), each receiving a year's free Somerset Wildlife Trust membership, a guide to urban mammals, and have their photograph featured in the Trust's Autumn/Winter members' magazine.

Wilder Lives manager at Somerset Wildlife Trust and member of the judging panel, Kristen Lambert, said: “Summer is often considered a time to celebrate and show gratitude to each other and nature outside of human beings.

“The photography competition is a great opportunity to get outside and capture the joy, beauty and wonder of wildlife and ‘nature moments’ in ways that hold meaning to you.” Andrew Kirby is a local wildlife photographer and member of the judging panel.

He said: “Photography has been a lifelong passion of mine, and Somerset has given me some of the richest and most rewarding wildlife encounters I've had anywhere.

"You don't need the most expensive equipment or years of experience to get started; just curiosity and a willingness to be patient.”

The competition opened for entries on Monday, July 13 and is free to enter. Submissions close on Monday, August 17 at 5 pm.
