PLANS to create a Wellington Sculpture Trail have been supported by councillors who believe it will add something fun to the town.
Many places have had similar trails whereby people follow a route and spot various sculptures all on a theme.
Members of Wellington Town Council’s town centre committee heard on September 26 that there was an idea for a Wellington Boot sculpture trail – which could cost around £20,000.
Cllr Nancy Powell-Brace said: “I think it would be brilliant. I like the idea of Wellington Boots – it would be different. It’s such a gimmick and the children would love it. It will certainly brighten up the town.”
Sean Pringle-Kosikowsky, a former town councillor but still a member of the town centre committee, said: “The Wellington Boots idea is a no-brainer for me!”
It was suggested that schools could really get involved in the project and some of the envisaged costs could be offset by sponsorship.
But Cllr Marcus Barr said: “My only concern is that we going through a cost of living crisis – how is this going to look to the public if we spend £20,000 on it?”
And committee chairman, Cllr Janet Lloyd, said: “It is a lot of money.”
Cllr Powell-Brace responded: “In times of adversity people look for something jolly.”
And Mr Pringle-Kosikowsky added: “Although I know what Cllr Barr is saying, I do think this is a way of allowing the council to give people something to enjoy for free.”
But Cllr Lloyd told members of Wellington Town Council on October 3 that following the town centre meeting there had been a development.
She told councillors that any plans for a Wellington Sculpture Trail would have to be put on hold because Taunton was having one next year.
“It takes months and months to organise and we haven’t got the time to get it sorted out for next year even if we wanted to do so,” she said.
