A FORMER dairy in Wellington is to be converted to a house after Somerset Council granted planning permission for a self-build project for new owners Simon and Julia Sparey.
The Old Dairy, situated behind Wellington Fire Station, was described as a pre-war industrial building which had been left derelict for a number of years.
Planning agent Lydia Dunne, of Whiteacre Planning Ltd, said: “The proposal represents a practical re-use of the site.
“The scheme will transform the site and preserve a striking local industrial building.
“The Old Dairy is an attractive industrial building which contributes to the sense of place in this part of the town.

“We know that local people are keen to see it improved and the applicants are committed to saving and enhancing the building.
“The design approach seeks to preserve the character of the post-war industrial building while introducing additional accommodation.
“The site is surrounded by community, commercial, and residential sites.
“In this urban environment, some noise or disturbance is expected, but with good quality windows and some planting within the site, the amenity of future residents of the property would be acceptable.”
Ms Dunne said an outbuilding would be demolished and an extension and garage built on the side.
Council planning officer Anthony Pick said: “The proposal retains and enhances the character of the existing building through a sensitive design approach that introduces contemporary designed additions.”
Mr Pick said the work included internal alterations to the main building, replacement of the roof covering, installation of new windows, construction of a replacement wing and a detached garage, and provision of hard and soft landscaping within the site.
A spokesperson for Wellington Town Council, which supported the plan because it retained the pre-war historic features, said: “The proposed development will improve a very untidy current situation.”
