PETER Critchard, Wellington's first-ever mayor, has announced he is stepping down as Liberal Democrat on the town council.

Mr Critchard, a 66-year-old former coach driver and a councillor for 13 years, says he no longer wants to be a member of a party that supports new cuts in welfare payments.
