PUPILS from Oake, Nynehead and Bradford Primary School, who won the national Great Bug Hunting competition, learnt fascinating facts about insects in a ‘Bug Day’, which was their prize.

Luke Tilley from the Royal Entomological Society and Rebecca Dixon Watmough from the Association for Science Education told them Britain has more than 24,000 species of insects and that insects are the only invertebrates that can fly, among other pieces of information.

The children also showed no fear as they held beetle larvae and Madagascan hissing cockroaches.

Class teacher Dorothy Hosken said: “The children were spellbound by the chance to observe and handle a range of amazing and exotic creatures.

“Luke was brilliant and the children learned a huge amount – about the animals and also about how to be a scientist. Thank you to Luke and Rebecca for coming to see us.”
