Farmer and National Trust volunteer John Greenshields and his family ‘virtually’ joined with Wellington Silver Band to celebrate VE-Day on Friday (May 8) when they played ‘The Last Post’ at Wellington Monument.

John’s daughter-in-law Davina Greenshields, on the flugel horn, and her son Henry, on the trombone, played ‘The Last Post’ at 2.55pm, before the two-minute silence at 3pm, and joining the nation to toast the heroes of the Second World War.

The family live together, just a short walk from the Wellington Monument, and followed social distancing guidelines.

Other members of the band, also following government guidelines, joined in virtually playing instruments from their own gardens or local open spaces.

John said: “It’s a great honour to be able to express our gratitude to all the members of the Armed forces and civilians who lost their lives in the Second World War, and to celebrate the end of that war in Europe.”
