NEARLY 1,000 people have so far signed an online petition calling for a lower speed limit and speed cameras following a fatal accident on the A38 outside the Beambridge Inn, near Wellington.
A male biker in his 50s on a Yamaha YBR motorcycle, which was in a collision with a Ford Focus, died after being taken to hospital following the crash last Friday (July 31) at 7.15am.
The crash is the latest in a number of incidents on this stretch of road, prompting Karen Holmes, from the pub, to launch the petition to Somerset County Council.
A statement said: “Following the tragic accident outside our business on Friday morning, I have decided to get a petition started to see if we can get something done about the speed limit along this road.
“In our 13 years at The Beambridge, we are saddened to say that we have seen many fatalities.
“Witnessing the fabulous paramedics doing everything they could to save this man’s life was harrowing. This was so tragic.
“Will you all please help me get as many signatures as possible to present to the powers that be to see if we can get a speed limit and cameras along this stretch of road.
“Our thoughts are with the gentleman’s family.”
To sign the online petition, which had been signed by 949 people by yesterday (Thursday) lunchtime, visit www.change.org and search for ‘Speed limit reduction and cameras at Beambridge’.
Anyone who saw the collision, or has dashcam footage of the crash, is asked to phone 101 and quote incident 204 of July 31.
