THE weather was perfect, the cars and crowds poured in, and the annual Fitzhead village fete weekend raised a new record £8,254, beating last year’s £6,890.
The traditional village fete on Saturday, held at the cricket ground and dating back to before World War One, is a much-loved summer highlight, while the duck race on Sunday saw 500 yellow plastic ducks meander down river at nearby Holcombe Farm.
Organiser Abi Wickham said: “It was a brilliant weekend.

“So many people in the village got involved volunteering for the fete and it was fantastic to have so many visitors.
“A great deal of work is involved and the community really comes together to make this such a success.”
Saturday saw plenty for everybody to enjoy, from children’s and adults races to homemade cakes and teas, burgers, ice-cream, and popcorn.
Wiveliscombe Town Band played and 10 radio’s Rev Andrew Norris kept up a high-energy commentary.
Top produce, craft, and creative work was on display in the flower show tent.
The duck race, organised by Martin and Mandy Irish, was also a huge success as dozens of families cheered on the ducks, and losers found compensation in teas on the lawns.
The duck race afternoon alone raised more than £900.
