Local environmental group Transition Town Wellington has been planning out the new forest garden for Fox’s Field, next to the old Tonedale Mill – and it will start planting on on Saturday (December 4).

The 8.5 acre field has been saved from development by the local community, and was purchased as amenity green space by Somerset West and Taunton Council in December 2019. A long lease on the land will be held by Wellington Mills Community Interest Company working in partnership with Transition Town Wellington (TTW).

TTW’s design team has come up with a planting scheme that will be both a great foraging place for local people, and a much more diverse habitat for local wildlife. Designing the planting has taken about six months to finalise.

The first planting will be on Saturday from 1pm to 3pm. Everyone is welcome, although children must be accompanied by an adult – wear wellies, bring a spade, gardening gloves and, if possible, some plain cardboard.

Check the TTW facebook page for updates and in case bad weather means rescheduling.
