ANGRY householders in a Wellington street have demanded council chiefs think again about a proposed housing scheme.
Residents in Holyoake Street are up in arms over controversial plans put forward by Taunton Deane Borough Council, which owns the properties, to demolish 15 bungalows and replace them with a three-storey block of 30 two-bedroom flats with modern facilities such as central heating.
But the scheme, for one two-storey, and one three-storey block, has attracted fierce criticism from tenants of the threatened bungalows, who say they don't want to leave their homes, and from neighbours, who say Holyoake Street and surrounding roads would become a traffic hell as tenants and visitors to the proposed scheme, which includes a new community hall, try to park.
Taunton Deane Borough Council said this week it had been considering how to upgrade the flats and bungalows on the Holyoake Street site for some time, and had started consultations with tenants and those living in the neighbourhood.
Any development of the site would be subject to the full planning process.
