A RURAL road near Wellington has been closed after part of it collapsed on Friday (January 23) as Storm Ingrid swept across the area.

Highways engineers are due to carry out a full assessment of the damage on Monday morning.

The incident happened at the Sampford Moor Farm culvert on Sampford Moor Road, which connects Sampford Arundel and Nicholshayne.

A Somerset Council spokesperson said: “The parapet wall has collapsed into the watercourse below, taking the verge and some of the carriageway along with it.

“For the safety of the public the road is fully closed.”

Elsewhere, temporary traffic lights were erected on Blackdown Hill Road between the top of Ford Street and Red Lane after severe potholes developed in the carriageway.

The A38 between Wellington and Taunton flooded in several places which regularly experience floods, including near Willowbrook Garden Centre, but remained passable.

The road from Wellington’s Cades roundabout on the B3187 to Nynehead gradually flooded at Hornshay overnight Friday into Saturday and became impassable by Saturday afternoon.

Tone Green, in Bradford on Tone has remained flooded since Christmas with residents complaining they had reported it to Somerset Council several times but were still waiting for anything to be done about it.

The road from the village to Oake was also under water, as was the Hillfarrance to Oake road, and lanes in nearby Stoford and Hele.

The council spokesperson said: “We are prioritising our response to main routes.

“They are ok so far, but please be mindful of the dangers of driving through surface water.

“If you are travelling, leave extra time and drive according to conditions, especially in heavy rain.”

There was little let-up in the weather on Saturday and the Met Office issued a fresh yellow warning for more heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday.
