Transition Town Wellington (TTW) has had two very different gardening sessions – one in glorious sunshine and one in persistent rain.

The wildflower seed sowing event at Rockwell Green had a good turnout with nearly 30 adults and children attending the fun and educational session. Participants made home-made peat-free compost from leaf mulch, municipal compost and soil, which the children enjoyed mixing, and sowed six different wildflowers, learning about the insects that rely on them and how they got their interesting names.

The families joined more than 20 other people around Wellington who are growing wildflower plants to brighten up community spaces. If individuals or schools would like to join in, seeds are still available to give away – just call 01823 669121.

TTW members created a new herb bed outside Wellington sports centre, to the left of the doors, from herbs given by kind people in Wellington.

There is a beautiful rosemary, as well as a mini ‘edible meadow’ containing mint, chives, oregano, feverfew, chervil and others, which will in time intermingle to create an informal, flower-rich herb bed, for passers-by to harvest a handful for their dinner, and to provide a much needed nectar resource for pollinators.

A sign will soon be added that will show the varieties and how to use them. The site will be dry due to the tree and bushes sharing the plot, so anyone who has water left in their bottle when leaving the gym or exercise class, can use it to help keep them watered.
