Four members of Wyvern Class at West Buckland Primary School achieved a magnificent fourth place at the national Fly To The Line Glider finals at Fleet Air Arm Museum.
Having progressed through the regional finals, held at Aerospace Bristol, the West Buckland quartet competed against 17 other schools and designed, built and launched a model glider down the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.
This journey began with a spring term class topic on aviation, in which the girls flew paper, balsa wood and polystyrene model planes while learning about how to control the movement of the plane and create designs that improved the distance the gliders would travel.
Class teacher Steven Bate said: “This is a fantastic achievement. The girls have listened to the advice they have been given and worked brilliantly as a team to constantly re-evaluate their designs for their glider. Female engineering is in good hands!”
