MORE than 2,000 spectators turned out at Wellington Rugby Club to see the annual firework display and bonfire on a pleasant and dry November 5 Monday evening.

The crowd counted down to the themed display warmed by a roaring bonfire topped with illuminated Guy, again created by children at Beech Grove Primary School and Caroline Davey.

The event was compered by ex-club president Greg Dyke with sound and music compiled by Alan Mitchell from St John’s School and engineered by Terry Milton.

The crowd were treated to an aerial and field display set to the music of Postman Pat, Chas and Dave, Thomas the Tank Engine, Jackman the Showman and Queen. Meat Loaf’s Bat out of Hell was used to enhance other set pieces. The display included a mini Dr Who battle scene of cross-firing Dalek and Tardis, and a grand finale tribute battle scene of two cross-firing tanks with a poppy and the Last Post to commemorate the end of the First World War.

Neil Bache once again directed the display supported by his firing team of John Crockett, Mark Wardell, Simon Cottrell, Julian Jones and Allyn Chetland, whose experience provided another safe, successful and spectacular display.

Neil said: “Every year we try and provide a good family night out, and I hope this year was no exception. The display simply would not happen if it was not for the hard work and support of all those involved, including our family and friends. Thanks to all the people of Wellington and the surrounding area for their continued support.”

The organisers would also like to thank all those from the club who volunteered their time to help make the night a success including David Case, Hector Dunstan, Andrew Case, Nick Southcott, Andy Dunstan, Ian Grabham, Chris Bullock, Richard Fox, Taffy Jones Snr, Tony Dunbar and gate, bar, patrol and clearing up helpers.

They would also like to thank Wellington Timber and Swallowfield Consumer Products who helped and supported the event, and St John’s Ambulance.
