SELF-STYLED ‘digital nomads’, Milverton couple Myles and Karen Davies, are set to hit the road on a Europe-wide travel adventure likely to last at least a year.
They are heading to the north of Spain in their trusty motorhome next month to start the trip – armed only with a laptop computer to help pay their way.
The enterprising couple, who have dubbed themselves the ‘Motor Roamers’, are going to try to make a business out of travel by earning a crust online.
Myles, 49, and Karen, 47, are both self-employed and already have a website – www.motoroaming.com – up and running. Karen teaches children meditation and is a lifecoach, and plans to write e-books while she is away, including on motor roaming, camping and the countries they visit.
The couple will also be busy blogging to create an online following and promote their website – and they hope to earn some money by promoting suppliers for the trip via the site. Karen is also a keen photographer and hopes to sell photographs of their travels.
Earning online will be easier for Myles – he deals in stocks and shares, so being away from home should not be so much of a problem.
The couple may also do some house-sitting – joining house-sitting websites would allow them to mind someone’s home and avoid paying campsite fees and for petrol.
Myles and Karen, who lived in the Isle of Man for 18 years before coming to Somerset just under four years ago, decided on the trip after going to New Zealand this time last year and hiring a motorhome as part of their 25th anniversary present to each other.
Karen said: “I really enjoyed the transient way of things and being out in nature – there was just something really spectacular about the whole experience of moving from one place to another and not being anchored to anywhere. I think the trip surprised and inspired us – and we decided we could live together in a tiny space without killing each other!”
The couple plan to spend two months in Spain after sailing to Santander from Plymouth before heading to south-west France to see family. They will then meet Karen’s mum after she flies into Geneva and see Annecy, a beautiful Alpine town in south-east France.
They will then make their way through the Rhine Valley and head to Scandinavia to spend the summer there. In that time they will stay with friends in Swedish Lapland for a couple of weeks before making their way back south before the snow, either heading for Spain or Greece, somewhere warm for the winter.
Karen said: “We are just going to meander and let the moment take us, which as a scheduler and planner is going to be quite a challenge – I ran my own business for nearly 20 years. It is going to be a really interesting experience.”
Pilote, the French motorhome they will be travelling in, is 7.5metres long but has all the essentials – a kitchen, oven, fridge-freezer, shower, toilet and sink, island bed, dining room and storage at back – and Karen cannot wait to go. “We are about to live our dream,” she said. “I think this is going to be so life-changing.”
