Achieving a health and fitness goal requires daily choices, over and over again: “Shall I have a piece of cake with my coffee? Another glass of wine? One more spoonful? Take the stairs or the escalator? Do I want to do my workout today? Walk or take the car? Apple or chocolate bar? Cook at home or get a take-away?”

These are the types of questions we are all challenged with on a daily basis. As the picture represents, all of these choices bring us to a cross-roads. One choice takes us closer to our goal, one choice further away. Granted, it’s not about being perfect – we still want to enjoy our lives. However, we also have to accept that to achieve something we don’t currently have requires a different mindset and different daily choices.

One of these choices alone is not going to derail someone’s progress, but if we find ourselves consistently choosing the option which takes us further from our goal, don’t be surprised if we find ourselves miles away from where we want to be feeling like it’s a mountain to climb.

The key to long-term change is initially identifying our goal and why it’s so important to achieve that goal. Every time a choice is required, our goal – and the importance of that goal – should be the first thing we think of. Decide which way takes you closer to your goal and make the right choice. Over time, these regular daily choices will nudge you closer to your goal.

Clearly with these few statements above, picture someone who is achieving or has achieved a health and fitness goal – which choices do you think they consistently make?
