IT has been suggested that Wellington Town Council looks at employing somebody to organise community events for the town.

Town clerk Dave Farrow said in a report that the council was taking over the running of the street fair on September 25 after Wellington Carnival Committee decided to step down from its management.

Councillors had previously agreed to give £3,000 to Wellington Carnival Committee to help finance the fair, but now that money will be used by council staff to organise the event instead.

But Cllr Marcus Barr, speaking at the August town council meeting, said: “I think we should employ an entertainment person to put on the street fair next year to take the pressure off the town clerk and his staff.

“It would be good to have somebody to organise putting on events in the town and make it a hub for all the community.

Cllr Sean Pringle-Kosikowsky said it was important that the ongoing threat of Covid-19 should be at the “forefront of our minds” when organising the street fair.

Town clerk Mr Farrow agreed that safety was of paramount importance and the council would keep a close eye on the Covid-19 situation the closer they got to the event – even suggesting that it could be cancelled at the last-minute.

“If it’s not the right thing to do then we will pull it,” he said. “But we need to have something in place so that we can put it on.”

It was said during the meeting that it would be free to park in the car parks at North Street, South Street and Longforth Road on the day of the street fair on September 25.

The council is looking for volunteers to help on the day. If you would like to help out please email [email protected] or call the council office on 01823-662855 by August 28.
