THE Rockwell Green War Memorial Institute Club has been awarded a grant of £3,000 by Wellington Town Council.
The club had initially applied to the council for a grant of £5,000 to help towards a kitchen refurbishment project, but with it having been awarded financial support from other outlets it was agreed by councillors to give £3,000.
Cllr Janet Lloyd, the Mayor of Wellington, told the council’s monthly meeting, held via the Zoom video conferencing technology earlier this month, that the £3,000 figure had been recommended by the authority’s finance committee.
“We felt that £5,000 was a bit over the top, so we have proposed £3,000 instead,” she said.
Cllr Andrew Govier added: “We have discussed this matter in quite a lot of detail and it has been difficult to establish what they wanted the money for.
“But we should support this club and I know they will be over the moon with this grant.”
Cllr Govier said he hoped the money would go some way to help making the club ‘more appealing’ to people – at a time when similar social club facilities around the country will be desperately in need of support when they can re-open after the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown.
And Cllr Marcus Barr said he would like to thank the town council on behalf of the people of Rockwell Green for its support.
