Posh – if somewhat dated – frocks, stunning hats, tea, strawberries and cream were the order of the day when members of Sampford Arundel WI celebrated the group’s centenary in the Orangery at Nynehead Court.
Members dressed in clothes from yesteryear - from Land Army gaiters to exotic flower-power, with ‘mother-of-the-bride’ much in evidence.
Chris Clarke kept to the theme playing music from the past 100 years. Everyone sang along - even those who had not been born in the Cliff Richard or Lonnie Donegan era.
Later, members presented artefacts including a toasting fork, wash-dolly and a commemorative coin from the coronation. The latter evoked memories from one member of skiving off school to watch the procession.
Guests included WI county chair Sandra Ford and adviser Anne Chadwick. Nynehead Court resident Pat Aldridge, who had joined a women’s institute 60 years ago at the age of 44, was especially welcomed. She kindly gave her original membership badge to the group’s president.
Joan Knowlman, from the group, said: “Many thanks to the staff at Nynehead Court. Here’s to the next 100 years!”
