A LEGO-themed cafe will join Wellington’s High Street this July.

Founded by town resident and creative Steve James, Brickhaus Cafe Ltd is set to be the town’s newest hub for design and play for people of all ages.

The new venture replaces the recently closed Odette’s Tearooms, which had occupied the site for over nine years. The tearooms closed in September 2024.

Driven by his interest in mental health, Mr James wanted to create a “community hub” that was “slightly different.”

The founder said: “The concept mainly is to bring of bit of community into it, to offer something that’s interactive, that’s not on a computer; to actually walk away and feel like you’ve done something.

“I thought, what can I do that’s slightly different. I visited other cafés around the country and developed my idea from there.

“This is about people engaging with each other and building something together. I hope it can become a bit of a community hub as well.”

Previous to his new business venture, Mr James was the owner of a design agency and later became a brand development coach. Following a more recent stint living and working in Exeter, Mr James moved to Wellington over two years ago.

Now he hopes to channel his energy into his latest project to provide residents with a place to “relax and chill”.

The new colourful space features extensive LEGO builds — with more than 100 different sets to choose from — an outdoor area with giant LEGO bricks for smaller children, and a café for light refreshments.

Visitors will be able to book by the hour online, selecting the set they wish to construct.

The new Brickhaus Cafe on Wellington’s High Street is set to open on Sunday, July 6.
