SIX new HD cameras have been installed in Wellington to ‘help improve public safety’.
Wellington Town Council, working with Somerset Council, have replaced the previous ageing analogue cameras with a new suite of high-definition CCTV technology.
The town council says the investment ‘marks a significant step forward in improving public safety, supporting local policing efforts, and ensuring clearer, more reliable monitoring across key areas of the town’.
The six new HD cameras deliver sharper images which offer greater detail than the analogue units they replace.

This enhanced clarity allows for more accurate identification of incidents, vehicles, and individuals when required, strengthening the police’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to safety concerns.
Neighbourhood beat sergeant for Wellington, Sgt Jon O’Connor said: “I am grateful to Wellington Town Council for funding the upgraded CCTV to maintain high quality coverage within the town centre. The cameras are an invaluable tool in both preventing and detecting crime to ensure we keep Wellington a safe place for everyone.”
In addition to superior image quality, the upgraded system provides modern digital features such as improved low‑light performance, wider coverage, and more efficient footage retrieval.
These advancements give council officers and local police better tools to protect residents, support investigations, and maintain a welcoming environment for visitors and businesses.
A spokesperson for Wellington Town Council said: “The old analogue cameras served the town for many years, but technology has moved on. Our new HD system ensures Wellington is equipped with the clarity and reliability needed to meet today’s security expectations.”
The upgrade follows the decision of the town council to fund the continuation of the CCTV service provided through Somerset Council in 2023.
The town council funded four of the new cameras with Somerset Council funding the other two. The cameras are monitored by specialist staff working in the Somerset Council CCTV Centre in Bridgwater.
