CHILDREN in Years 5 and 6 at Beech Grove Primary School in Wellington learnt about life in the war years on a visit to Nothe Fort in Weymouth.

They attended school dressed as evacuees, were instructed how to fill in a postcard and add up pre-decimalised money.

In the home they helped with household routines such as Monday wash day and used ration books and old money to purchase goods.

The ARP– Air Raid Precautions – man explained his role, even giving them a life-like experience in an Anderson shelter and allowing them to help put out fires. They were also taught about the effect of war on Weymouth.

Children and adults had a great time thanks to the experienced volunteers at Nothe Fort.
