WELLINGTON firemen have told of the horror they confronted when they attended one of the worst ever British motorway crashes.

The call to the scene, in which seven people perished, north of junction 25 for Taunton, came at 8.45pm on Friday.

It was the second emergency call of the evening. A first crew had been sent to Bridgwater to monitor a river wall that was in danger of collapsing into the River Parrett as high tide approached.

Describing the scene on the M5, Dave Thomas, of Wellington fire station said: "It was utter chaos."
