THE annual Wellington Literacy Cluster public speaking competition, ‘Look Who’s Talking’, has been held at West Buckland Primary School.

The competition involves performing a learnt poem and delivering a four-minute presentation entitled ‘My World’, before answering questions posed by the judging panel.

The judges were Clinton Rogers (BBC Points West), Anne Harvey (Somerset Literacy Network), Helen MacGregor (headteacher of West Buckland Primary School) and Erin Haeffner (Transition co-ordinator for Court Fields School).

The five participating primary schools – St John’s, Rockwell Green, Langford Budville, Sampford Arundel and West Buckland – all provided two contestants, a child from Year 3 and 4 and a child from Year 5 and 6.

The competition opened with a demonstration of performance poetry from a selection of Court Fields Secondary School pupils. Inspired by this the primary school children wowed the audience with their poetry recitals before giving a wide and varied selection of topics in the My World presentation section.

After much deliberation from the judges, and for the first time in the three-year history of the competition, a child from the younger age group, Ida from West Buckland Primary School, scooped both the Year 3 and 4 trophy and the overall prize. The other winner on the evening was William from Sampford Arundel Primary School who took home the Year 5 and 6 trophy.
